The culinary team at Regal Heights Rehabilitation and Health Care Center (Director Kim Bunn-Minsky, RD, Chefs Christelorme Laurore and Maria Manolatos and Supervisor Yovanny Gomez) was chosen to participate in the 6th annual Big Apple Health Care Culinary Challenge which was held on March 13, 2014 at the Institute for Culinary Education in Manhattan. The event was hosted by the Association for Healthcare Food Service Chapter of New York and drew a crowd of over 100 spectators.
The event’s format was an “Iron Chef” style challenge where Regal Heights and two other competing health care organizations were given a secret ingredient (GMO-hormone/antibiotic-free, free range turkey) which needed to be used to make a salad, appetizer and entrée in a 60 minute time frame. This was the first time a Long-Term Care facility has participated in this event and our team received accolades from the prestigious judges. We look forward to competing again next year!
